Local 17’s Jamie Harms Shines at 2025 MAC Competition in Chicago

June 20, 2025 – Chicago, IL – Local 17 proudly represented at the Master Apprentice Competition (MAC) was held in Chicago from June 20th to June 24th, where apprentices from across the United States and Canada converged to showcase their skills and commitment to the trades. Amongst the competitors, fifth-year apprentice Sister Jamie Harms took to the stage, proudly embodying the dedication and spirit of Local 17.

We believe it is fitting that Sister Harms shared her feelings to the membership and how she felt representing our great local:

I had the honor of representing local 17 at the Mac because of all the opportunities the union offers. I was first introduced to local 17 at a Chicago job fair where I met sister Delia. Later the hall opened its doors to my pre apprenticeship, Chicago women in the trades. Upon entering the apprenticeship, the new six-week intro gave the tool set to work confidently. From there, there were upgrade classes. I was baffled by the layouts Ben frank showed me. But here I am now a fifth year, provided with all the material, information, and fellowship I could ever need to succeed at the Mac and in my career. I am the result of the union’s commitment to job outreach, strong JTC, and solidarity.

So when I look back at all the extra details in my finish, and share stories for my union, I can see the impact it has made. I hope as a result of me and my fellow competitors’ work, folks of any background can envision themselves in this role. This is a job worth working for and a good job is freedom. I am so proud and grateful for this experience on my home turf. Looking forward to paying it forward soon. Thank you, brothers and sisters, for taking me and my family there. Especially the ones I worked under who gave me tools, scrap materials, an ear, and a kick in the butt! Union strong!

At the end of the competition congratulations goes to Alex Raglan of local 1 Saint Louis. There were no losers, only winners.  However, Sister Harms dedication to this competition, her craft, and her character show that she is  truly our winner here at local 17. Thank you for representing our organization so well. We are all very proud of you!
